1949- Became one of the leaders of the ANC.
1962- Put in prison because of the strong influence he had on people to try and end the apartheid.
1990- Freed from prison after serving 27 years.
1991- Became president of the ANC.
1993- Awarded Nobel Peace Prize for work with the country's president to end the apartheid.
1994- Became president of the country.
1997- Stepped down as head of the ANC.
1999- Retired from all politics after serving one term as the country's president.
